Good Reads

While preparing a zine for my grand opening party, I started looking through Jean Railla's Get Crafty: Hip Home Ec. I first read the book a few years ago and nearly forgot how good it is! After speaking with tons women (and men), Railla began to notice that many folks were embracing traditional feminine crafts as a way to speak out about mass production. Through what she coins as "the new domesticity", Railla explains what the DIY movement is about. Part manifesto and part hot-to, her book offers alot of think about and a lot of inspiration!

Debbie Stoller editor of Bust Magazine and author of Stitch-n-Bitch says: “Martha Stewart meets Patti Smith in this essential homemaking manual for the modern-day gal (and guy). With projects ranging from the straightforward (how to paint your room) to the sublime (Jean's grandmother's Madeleine recipe) as well as a keen sense of both the political and spiritual reasons for why young people are embracing the "New Domesticity," Get Crafty is the best proof yet that crafting is the new rock n' roll.”
